50% of all the manufacturing that takes place in Wuhan, where the coronavirus outbreak first started, is related to the automotive industry, while 25% is technology supply related.

During the Chinese New Year, production is typically down 20%, so many companies were already prepared for some fall in output. It is yet to be seen how the extended factory closures over the period will affect the supply chain in the coming weeks and months.

400 million

Around 400 million people travel in China during the New Year holidays, giving some indication as to how the coronavirus has spread on such a wide scale.

As a result of the factory closures air freight has halved and shipping backlogs have been stacking up along the Yangtze River, cutting factory supplies in Europe and beyond.

At least five fastener, fixing and tool related industry trade shows have been postponed or axed as a result of exhibitor cancellations and health and safety concerns surrounding the coronavirus outbreak. Among the high profile casualties was the International Hardware Show in Cologne, which announced it was moving the event back to February 2021 with less than a week to go.
