Tackling the challenges of timber

Timber lends itself to all manner of construction, from interiors to exteriors, structural work to intricate design and finishes, decks and stairs, and a huge spectrum of environmental and climate variations. Using the right materials and tools for a quality fit and finish is imperative to ensure longevity, security and strength among other considerations. Torque looks at some of the screws and tools ready to take on any timber engineering challenge, including offerings from KWANTEX & Rothoblaas

KWANTEX > TTX® Drive

In the past, while users were fastening wood screws, some problems resulted from certain drive designs. For example, the bit did not fit well with the drive causing unexpected wobbling, drive abrasion, or bit slippage and even breakage.

Kwantex developed the improved 6-lobe TTX® drive with TTX® bit which features a unique sharp hook design, no cam-out and stronger torque transfer.

The specially developed sharp hook design allows the TTX® bit to transfer high torque, thus users can even fasten screws with only one hand, which is both time and force saving, not to mention that inexperienced users can also finish installation easily.

// TTX® Drive helps achieve tight fastening, avoid slippage, increases the contact surface between the drive and the TTX® bit, reduces stress accumulation, and optimised torque transfer. //

TTX® Drive system is not only applicable to wood screws, but also to screws for penetrating construction steel and machine screws for steel structure and industrial assembly.

TTX® Drive helps achieve tight fastening, avoid slippage, increases the contact surface between the drive and the TTX® bit, reduces stress accumulation, and optimised torque transfer.

TTX® bit fits almost all 6-lobe drives, and all 6-lobe bits can fit the TTX® drive. It helps users to drive the screws smoothly and easily during the entire process.

A Kwantex goal is to provide the best performance screws that are affordable to everyone and can be quickly and joyfully used to complete daily jobs by fastening the innovative designed screws made from various materials and treated with different surface finishes.

Rothoblaas > Full Thread Screws

The Italian multinational company Rothoblaas, headquartered in the heart of the Alps, has supported timber construction for over 30 years by designing technological solutions for fastening, soundproofing, durability, vapour control, airtightness and safety.

One of the most successful products in the Rothoblaas universe are the VGZ connectors, full-thread screws that offer the possibility of making concealed connections between timber elements.

// The screw is particularly useful where there is an increased risk of cracking or splitting because the milled ribs facilitate countersinking in different types of wood. //

VGZ screws: total reliability for your timber structures

VGZ is a screw for structural timber with CE marking according to ETA-11/0030 certificate. It is characterised by very high mechanical performances thanks to the steel strength class and thread geometry.

The design of the screw is characterised by a full thread shank and a cylindrical head with a very small diameter. These two features allow the connector to perform effectively under axial stresses, such as tension and compression, and ensure that during the screwing operation the head can be positioned inside the timber, making it almost imperceptible to the eye.

The wide range offered varies from the smallest size of 5mm diameter by 80mm length, to the largest of 11mm diameter by 600mm length.

Types of application: structural reinforcement

Wood is an anisotropic material. Therefore, it has different mechanical characteristics depending on the direction of the grain and the stress. Although it has less strength and stiffness for stresses orthogonal to the grain, it can be reinforced with full thread connectors such as VGZs.
