An unavoidable truth

The United Nations Climate Change Conference aka COP28 recently closed in Dubai. You may have an opinion on that location playing host to such an event, but one way to look at it is that even the UAE is acknowledging that the sustainability agenda is unavoidable.

It seems a far cry from the days of Al Gore’s film in 2006, An Inconvenient Truth, which has been credited with helping push the message about “hard to grasp” climate change all those years ago.

Google Trends is a great indicator of what the world (most of it) is searching for and the graph measuring searches for the “sustainability” topic is an interesting one. Levels were fairly consistent from the early part of the century all the way until 2019, when there was a sizeable spike of interest. Then interest in sustainability spiked again during the pandemic and has largely remained on a high since then.

The pressing need for environmentally friendly action is, admittedly in part, driven by customers and clients keen to hit their own ESG targets, which now firmly places the spotlight on suppliers. But a lot of carbon cutting activity is also due to diligent and concerned businesses keen to do the right thing for their communities and the world at large. The net result is huge momentum for the sustainability agenda.

So, now the pressing need for sustainability is less an inconvenient truth than an unavoidable one. You can read about how some of the fastener and tool industry companies are playing their part in striving for sustainability in the following pages and it’s our pleasure and privilege to highlight them.
