BAU bounces back for 2023
Architecture, materials and systems… the BAU trade fair is returning to Munich for the first time since 2019, with plenty of fastener and tool-relevant products, exhibitors and insights…
Four years ago, BAU put on a record breaking show, bringing together 2,250 exhibitors from 45 countries to showcase their products and solutions for the building sector. Visitor numbers hit a high of 250,000, with visitors outside Germany hitting an all time high of 85,000 (from 150 countries).
The organisers have high hopes for this year’s trade fair, the first since Covid, which will run over 17-22 April 2023 at Messe München Trade Fair Centre, telling Torque Magazine: “We are very pleased to welcome the construction industry back here in Munich after this long break. Since the return of the trade fairs last spring, the events have seen a decline in visitor numbers on average. However, we hope to be able to counteract this current trend with BAU.”
Certainly there will be a lot to catch up on and tackle at the show, from burning issues like sustainability to a wealth of new products and services…

Beck showcasing LIGNOLOC automation solution at BAU
Hall: C6 – Booth: 303
Wooden nails and robots may not commonly work together, but fastening pioneer BECK and KEHRATEC, a leading specialist in the fields of robot automation, intralogistics and process control systems, will be demonstrating the joint LIGNOLOC® pilot project at the BAU in Munich. The two companies are working on a robot-assisted system for the fully or partially automated implementation of timber construction projects, especially by pre-assembling completely glue-free and metal-free wall elements.
CUSTOMISABLE SYSTEM At the show, the automation solution will be demonstrated at the BECK booth with an original KUKA robot and a wall section. In practice, the system can be adapted to the needs of the customer. At BAU one wall element will be produced per day. Once an hour another layer of boards will be attached by the robot with the LIGNOLOC® wooden nails. A FASCO® nailing head, BECK's own brand of pneumatic tools, is used for driving in the nails. No pre-drilling is required for the collated wooden nails.
LIGNOLOC AND ROBOTICS – ADVANTAGES FOR CARPENTERS For CEO and General Manager Christian Beck, the advantages of robotics and ecological fastening technology in mass timber construction are obvious: “Small and medium-sized timber construction companies and carpenters throughout Europe should be able to manufacture metal- and glue-free mass timber wall elements themselves.
“With the expansion of the LIGNOLOC ecosystem in terms of compatibility with common processing solutions, as well as the co-engineering of the flexible, digital robot platform together with KEHRATEC, the use of mass timber elements becomes more flexible and the transport distances shorter. As a final consequence, it will be cheaper for many companies to manufacture mass timber elements themselves.” Beck is sure of the benefits for the timber construction industry.

Bossong launches next gen super epoxy resin, E-Plus
Hall: A4 – Booth: 111
Bossong’s BAU presence will in part be to showcase its new E-Plus – a new chemical anchor (bi-component styrene-free pure epoxy resin). It’s the newest version of the original Epox from the 1990s. The short name is intended to encapsulate 30 years of R&D in the chemical anchor sector.
Its 100-year service life is twice the standard 50 years, which means that this resin is ideal for major works. Other of its main advantages include applicability in flooded holes tested also underwater, fire resistance up to a maximum of R24, natural ability to penetrate in holes and hollow materials thanks to the successful combination of fluidity and adherence reaching up to 2.5 metres of extrusion, no expansion or shrinking, suitable for use with masonry, wood, and concrete, in a range of temperatures that allows use also at 50°C, strong grip on smooth surfaces such as core holes.
It has also picked up a good few certifications. It performs in terms of the environment, because all Bossong chemical anchors are qualified according to the LEED protocol concerning the certification of VOC content (Volatile Organic Compounds) and have obtained the highest qualification level, i.e. A+ rating, of the French regulation. The resin has obtained EOTA approval for concrete bonding in accordance with EAD 330499-01-0601 and EAD 330087-01-0601. Its aseismic performance is especially notable as it is double that of the current product and has obtained the highest C2 rating for M12 and M24. It is the jewel in the crown of this new 3:1 formula capable of reacting efficiently to significant earth movements, just as the certified aseismic Rebar rods with 12mm to 32mm diameter.
Created to meet the needs of the construction sector while also respecting the environment, offering safety and maximising structural consolidation, E-Plus is the latest step in a journey that started decades ago. Between the ‘60s and the ‘70s, the company specialised first in the production of rivets and riveting machines for concrete anchoring, then mechanic anchors and plugs. The shift to chemical anchors was made by chemist Luciano Taddei, founder of Bossong SpA Italia, and marked a decisive and fortunate change of direction. The formulation and filling of these bi-component chemical anchors to fix metal elements in concrete and masonry structures with epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester resins, led to the company’s worldwide success.
At the start of the new millennium, the recently established EOTA certification body approved the products on a European and International scale but at the same time forced the company to align to increasingly higher standards and face competition on a wider scale. Bossong took on the new challenges by focusing on research and innovation, aware that each investment was a step towards market leadership.
E-Plus, just like the Epoxy21 before it, developed following the earthquake that devastated L’Aquila in 2009 and was reportedly the first product in the world to obtain the C2 aseismic certification for fixing standard threaded rods. This opened new opportunities for the company in the world of qualified constructions, as well as a chance to operate in the art and cultural heritage sector.
An additional reason of pride for the company that finds application in Italy and across the world stems from a solid base and the willingness to invest. The inauguration of a new logistics centre afforded the opportunity to totally redesign the company: inside, the warehouse is completely automated and connected using all the latest technologies, leaving more space in the main building for additional production lines, also connected using 4.0 next generation technologies and robotics. Last but not least, the 1,250 square meters of photovoltaic panels — providing almost 200,000 kWh and a power of approximately 200 kW per year — are a tangible proof of the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint; a circular economy approach that benefits the entire community.

Klimas to showcase vast Poland-made range at BAU
Hall: A1 – Booth: 519
Klimas Wkręt-met is a Polish-originated manufacturer of construction fastening techniques. The company is Polish, but the Klimas Fasteners brand created by it is international.
This is consistent with the company's strategy, which for several years has been increasing its expansion under the slogan #GoGlobal, not limiting itself to Europe only. Thanks to its high-quality products, the highest production and service standards, and, above all, the guarantee of an uninterrupted supply chain, the company is conquering more markets, including the most demanding ones. As a manufacturer, Klimas can maintain greater independence and, despite the turbulence in global markets, punctually deliver orders to various corners of the world.
The scale on which the company operates is impressive, Klimas products can be found in nearly seventy countries: from Norway to Australia. Other companies of Klimas are appearing in different regions of the world, showing that the company's global development strategy is correct. The Polish company is not hindered either by distance or cultural differences – it has found its way solidly to the Asian market, for example, participating in significant investments and opening offices in more countries.
With a product portfolio of 6,500 products including carpentry, ETICS insulation systems, drywall, or frame fixings. Every day the factory produces 30 million screws, 9 million plastic fasteners, and hardens 21 million screws. The two production facilities are also impressive: an area of up to 80,000 square kilometers, a warehouse with 25,000 storage spaces, and nearly 800 employees who ensure the highest production standards every day.
The quality of Klimas products is confirmed not only by reference facilities from all over the world but also by ETA European Technical Approvals. With its laboratory, advanced technologies, among the most modern machinery in Central and Eastern Europe, and cooperation with leading architects and constructors, Klimas is constantly improving its product range, introducing novelties such as the milling tip, which significantly speeds up the screwing process and makes the contractors' work easier.
The Klimas phenomenon is that for all the huge scale of its operations, the company does not lose its family character. Founded in 1990 by Joanna and Wojciech Klimas, it has invariably remained in the hands of the owners and their children, who have been involved in the company's work from an early age.
