Power tool sector steps ups its sustainability game
Stanley Black & Decker has been hitting the headlines for two big sustainability initiatives affecting its tools lines…
In September, Stanley Black & Decker partnered with international recycling leader, TerraCycle, in the USA, to encourage consumers to recycle tool products containing integral lithium-ion batteries.
The free programme will begin to accept a variety of products under the Stanley Black & Decker brand portfolio, including BLACK+DECKER®, DEWALT®, CRAFTSMAN®, STANLEY®, PORTER-CABLE®, IRWIN®, LENOX®, MAC TOOLS® and BOSTITCH®.
Once collected the waste is cleaned, sorted by the material composition and reduced into material that can be remoulded to make new recycled products.
"Stanley Black & Decker strives to further our ESG mission and is committed to creating a more sustainable world, with a focus on reducing waste," said Debi Geyer, Corporate Responsibility Officer at Stanley Black & Decker. "One way we are doing this, is by providing our customers with product recycling options that are easy and cost effective to perform. Together, we can work to create a lasting, positive sustainable change for our communities."
THERE ARE DIFFERENT ASPECTS TO THE SCHEME, INCLUDING >
Stanley Black & Decker Tool Free Recycling Programme Participants are invited to send in Stanley Black & Decker power tools, hand tools and accessories. After signing up to the TerraCycle page, customers can mail in eligible waste using the provided prepaid shipping label.

Recycled riviva tools >
More recently, SBD brand BLACK+DECKER announced the retail launch of the first phase of the riviva™ power tool line. The DIY-focused tool line is geared for the eco-conscious consumer. Each tool’s housing is manufactured from 50% recycled material, with the reviva drill driver, detail sander, jigsaw and screwdriver now available for purchase.
Each reviva product is created in partnership with Eastman and the tool's housing is engineered for durability, made from Tritan™ Renew, a 50% certified recycled material. In addition to its tool housing composition, every tool in the reviva family of products is delivered in packaging designed to be curbside recyclable which doubles as a storage box.
"With the launch of the reviva product line, BLACK+DECKER has taken the next step in its sustainability journey," said Debi Geyer, Corporate Responsibility Officer at Stanley Black & Decker. "Within three years, the weight of more than 10 million single-use plastic bottles are forecast to be diverted from oceans and landfills to manufacture the reviva line – a first of its kind for BLACK+DECKER, these revolutionary products are designed to meet the needs of a new generation of eco-conscious consumers."
As one of the most significant players in the tool market, these latest moves by Stanley Black + Decker to make its tool business more sustainable will likely influence others to follow and also make clear that there are a range of routes available to those looking to boost sustainability efforts.
